A resident's permit payment failed

Last updated: November 3, 2026

If a resident's permit payment failed, it's usually one of four causes. The permit stays inactive until a payment goes through, so start with the quick checks below.

Quick checks

  • Confirm the resident's application is approved. Payment options don't appear until it is.

  • Ask the resident to re-enter their card number, expiration date, and CVV.

  • Ask them to check their internet connection and try again, so the payment isn't interrupted.

Common causes and fixes

Insufficient funds or a blocked card

What you'll see: The payment is declined even though the card details are correct.

How to fix it: The resident should check that the account has enough funds. If it does, they should contact their bank to confirm the card isn't frozen or flagged for fraud.

Billing address doesn't match

What you'll see: The payment fails address verification.

How to fix it: The resident should re-enter the billing address exactly as it appears on their card statement. If it still fails, they can select Use different billing address than profile address and enter the card's billing address there.

Card verification step wasn't completed

What you'll see: The payment fails after the bank asks the resident to confirm their identity, for example with a one-time code, a password, or a fingerprint.

How to fix it: The resident should try again and complete the verification step when prompted. If it fails again, they should contact their bank.

The card itself keeps failing

What you'll see: Payments keep failing after the checks above.

How to fix it: The resident should try a different card. If that doesn't work, they should contact their bank or card issuer.
