Florida sales tax on parking permits

Last updated: November 4, 2026

Florida state law requires sales tax to be collected on parking-related purchases. For communities in Florida, ParkingPass calculates it automatically and adds it at checkout.

ParkingPass handles the tax entirely. Residents, guests, and property managers don't need to take any action to apply it. This article explains how it works for permit and guest pass purchases and what to expect.

What's covered

  • Permit and guest pass purchases at communities located in Florida.

  • When a resident or guest checks out, ParkingPass calculates the applicable state sales tax automatically.

  • The tax line appears on the order preview before the resident confirms payment, so there are no surprises.

  • The total charged to the resident's payment method includes both the permit price and the tax.

  • Stripe processes the tax along with the underlying payment. There's no separate tax-only transaction.

What residents see

Residents at Florida communities see a sales tax line item on:

  • The Order Preview screen during checkout

  • The confirmation email after payment

  • Their Payment History on their profile

The line item is labeled clearly, so residents can see the tax separately from the underlying permit cost.

What property managers need to do

Nothing. Florida sales tax is configured at the platform level. Your community's billing setup doesn't need to change, and there are no additional tax-related fields in property settings.

If a resident asks why their checkout total is higher than the listed permit price, you can say: "The additional amount is Florida state sales tax, calculated and collected automatically."

What isn't covered

  • Communities outside Florida. Florida sales tax doesn't apply to their residents' transactions.

  • This is true even if a specific resident lives in Florida or pays with a Florida-issued card.

Refunds and sales tax

When a refund is issued for a Florida transaction, the refund includes the sales tax component proportionally.

  • For example, if a resident wins a violation dispute that included a $5.00 sales tax line, the $5.00 is refunded along with the underlying violation amount.

  • For partial refunds, the tax is prorated based on the refunded amount.

See Refund policy for the full refund framework.

Important notes

  • ParkingPass is responsible for collecting Florida sales tax at the point of sale and remitting it to the state. ParkingPass's accounting team handles this.

  • Property managers aren't responsible for tax filings or remittance related to ParkingPass transactions.

  • The exact sales tax rate may vary by jurisdiction within Florida, including state and any applicable local rates. It's calculated based on the community's location.

  • Tax rates can change over time. ParkingPass updates the calculation automatically when rate changes take effect.

  • Other states with similar tax requirements may be added in the future. See Permit expiration, grace period, and late fees and the Announcements feed on your dashboard for the latest updates.
