Permit types explained: Do-Not-Tow for employees
Last updated: November 4, 2026
Do-Not-Tow (DNT) for employees authorizes the vehicles of people who work for your community and park on-site, through an expiration date you set.
Not sure this is the right permit type? See Permit types explained: which one should I use?
How it works
Employee DNT entries cover staff who work for the community: maintenance staff, office staff, leasing agents, and on-site managers. They aren't residents, but they're regulars who need authorization while they're employed.
When you add an entry, you set an expiration date. The vehicle is authorized through that date. After it, the entry expires and the vehicle is treated like any other unauthorized vehicle.
ParkingPass doesn't send a reminder before a DNT entry expires. Tracking expirations is on you. You can extend an entry before it expires, like when a contract renews, or let it lapse when someone leaves.
Who can use it
Property managers add, extend, and remove DNT entries.
Where to find it
Go to Do-Not-Tow in the left sidebar and click New Do-Not-Tow. You can also open a resident's profile, go to Registered Vehicles, click Vehicle Actions, and choose Protect Vehicle (DNT).
The Do-Not-Tow page is the only place to see which employee vehicles are registered in your community.
What you can do with it
Add, extend, or remove an entry — see Managing the Do-Not-Tow (DNT) list.
Choosing an expiration date
Permanent staff: six to twelve months out. That's long enough to avoid constant renewals and short enough to force a periodic review.
Seasonal or contract employees: the known end date of their contract.
New hires on probation: the end of their probationary period.
Common questions
When should I add a new hire?
Before their first shift, so they aren't towed during onboarding. Add a calendar reminder a couple of weeks before the expiration to renew it.
An employee left before their entry expired. What do I do?
Remove the entry right away. Don't wait for the expiration — until then, a former employee's vehicle is still authorized. If they're now a resident, register their vehicle with a resident permit instead.
An entry expired while the person still works here. What happens?
Their vehicle is unauthorized from the expiration date. Renew or re-add the entry as soon as you notice, and set a recurring reminder so it doesn't happen again.
The employee also lives here. Which type do I use?
If they drive the same car to work and at home, a resident permit covers it. Use an employee DNT entry only for a work vehicle or a vehicle they drive just on shift.
Important notes
A vehicle authorized yesterday can be towable today if nobody renewed its entry. Keep a recurring reminder, or review the DNT list quarterly.
Don't put a resident's personal vehicle on the DNT list to skip the permit process.
Each community has a limit on how many vehicles can be on the DNT list.
