Florida Sales Tax on Parking Permits

How Florida sales tax is applied to ParkingPass permit and guest pass purchases for properties in Florida.

Florida state law requires sales tax to be collected on parking-related purchases. For ParkingPass properties located in Florida, this means sales tax is automatically calculated and added to permit and guest pass purchases at checkout.

The tax is handled entirely by ParkingPass — residents, guests, and property managers don't need to take any action to apply it. This article explains how it works and what to expect.

How Florida Sales Tax Is Applied

  • When a resident or guest checks out from a Florida property, ParkingPass calculates the applicable state sales tax automatically.

  • The tax line appears on the order preview before the user confirms payment, so there are no surprises.

  • The total charged to the resident's payment method includes both the permit price and the tax.

  • Stripe processes the tax along with the underlying payment — there is no separate tax-only transaction.

What Residents See

Residents at Florida properties will see a sales tax line item on:

  • The Order Preview screen during checkout

  • The confirmation email after payment

  • Their Payment History on their profile

The line item is labeled clearly so residents can see the tax separately from the underlying permit cost.

What Property Managers Need to Do

Nothing. Florida sales tax is configured at the platform level — your property's billing setup does not need to change, and there are no additional tax-related fields in property settings.

If a resident asks why their checkout total is higher than the listed permit price, the answer is: the additional amount is Florida state sales tax, calculated and collected automatically.

Refunds and Sales Tax

When a refund is issued for a Florida transaction:

  • The refund includes the sales tax component proportionally.

  • For example, if a resident wins a citation dispute that included a $5 sales tax line, the $5 is refunded along with the underlying citation amount.

  • For partial refunds, the tax is prorated based on the refunded amount.

See Refund Policy for the full refund framework.

Who Collects and Remits the Tax

ParkingPass is responsible for collecting Florida sales tax at the point of sale and remitting it to the state. This is handled by ParkingPass's accounting team — property managers are not responsible for tax filings or remittance related to ParkingPass transactions.

Properties Outside Florida

This article applies only to properties located in Florida. If your property is located elsewhere, Florida sales tax does not apply to your residents' transactions — even if a specific resident happens to live in Florida or pays from a Florida-issued card.

Other states with similar tax requirements may be added in the future. See Permit Expiration, Grace Period & Late Fees and the Announcements feed on your dashboard for the latest updates.

Important Notes

  • The exact sales tax rate may vary by jurisdiction within Florida (state plus any applicable local rates) and is calculated based on the property's location.

  • Tax rates can change over time. ParkingPass updates the calculation automatically when rate changes take effect.

  • If you have a tax-related question that affects a specific resident transaction, email [email protected] with the transaction details.

  • This article is informational. ParkingPass is not a tax advisor — consult a tax professional for guidance specific to your property or business.
